Hi Mitzi,
Two years ago my boyfriend and I drove to the upper peninsula and camped at Taquamenon Falls. Besides all the Michigan families we saw so many out of state families too, and everyone seemed to enjoy the falls and the state park. Years ago (1970 - yikes!) my family went but I don't remember being able to walk in the water and swim in the falls like you can now. You are on your own when you attempt it but, again, everyone had a wonderful time and it was a great way of relaxing and enjoying one of Michigan's greatest natural resources. I think the people who have lived in Michigan all their lives tend to forget about all the great places we have right here in our own state. Traveling along any part of the coast always seems to yield great views and scenery you won't find in most other states. Worth every picture.

Yes...Michigan Adventures is wonderful! Not as far, nor as overwhelming as Cedar Point, but great family fun to be had. http://www.miadventure.com/
If you're into camping, Tawas Point State Park has a really nice campground. Also, you can choose between a small (warm water) lake or Lake Huron (colder, but lovely) for swimming and play.

One memorable vacation when we were growing up was a trip to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes in Michigan. The family had a blast.

Petoskey is a beautiful area as well.

I am planning a camping vacation with my two sons ages 9 and 10. We are going to Yellowstone National park stopping on the way at Rapid City South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore and for the boys to be paleontologist and dig for Mammoth Bones in H 00ot Springs South Dakota. We are taking two weeks in July, The cost is more than a weekend trip to Michigan but the fun and sites are worth it.

As far as not too far and a great vacation our family (2 girls 13 & 16) have enjoyed trips to the Wisconsin Dells. We have gone there since they were younger and had a blast! The hotels have indoor/outdoor water parks and you don't even need to leave the resort. If you and your husband want to relax by the pool while the kids enjoy the water or join in I'm sure you'll love it. The Polyinesian there is GREAT! We are trying a new one this year.
I also agree with Mi. Adventue we love it and the water park and amusment park is just one price!

Kim, great suggestion, We've been there.....when it wasn't such a long drive. We used to live in Chicago and it's the place for all families that live in the area to go! We had a great time. I have a picture of Kelsey in her Daniel Boone Cap holding up a metal cup like she's a cowgirl or something...when she was only 2! You are right it's great family fun, expecially riding in the ducks!

For a small family oriented state park close to home, you really can't beat Port Crescent State Park for camping. It's a smaller park on the shores of Lake Huron, abourt 2-3 miles west of Port Austin, right at the tip of the thumb, about 2 hours from Detroit (which keeps the driving costs down.) A long time ago we started at Burt Lake State Park, cut the drive down to Higgins Lake State Park (still both the best for small kids due to the long sandy shallows off the beach), then finally to the quieter Port Crescent. One of the few beaches I've been on where your feet squeak in the sand, yes it's on thesandy side of the thumb! Only 10 miles further down the road is Caseville State Park, but I prefer Port Crescent. Reservations a must because of the size. Good perch fishing in the bay there or you can take the perch fishing boat out of Port Austin.

John, we must never have met...because me and camping do not go hand in hand! But thank you it does sound really pretty. I'm a hot shower and hair dryer kind of person....otherwise I have the largest head of hair you have ever seen! I think I'll mention this to Fay though, sounds like a place that she and her husband would love! Thanks!

Hi Mitzi,
One of my favorite places that I have visited 3 times now is Mammoth Caves, in Kentucky. Its about an 8 hour drive, so its not too overwhelming. They have a great lodge with a wonderful restaurant and also have individual cabins. The trails down to the river are a great way to start your morning, its such a beautiful park and there are several cave tours to chose from at various times through the day. The caves are awesome, and in the heat of summer are nice and cool. I am getting anxious for a 4th visit!

Wanda, Does taht mean you are a spelunker? I don't know if that's how it's spelled...that's how it sounds! I'll bet Kentucky is beautiful. I have never been there. Thanks for the suggestion.
