Oh yes...this happened twice, once with each child.

A valuable lesson is learned by both the parent and the child by taking life as it comes, one day at a time. If the parent is always "fixing" things in the child's path, the child learns nothing on how to deal with life's struggles. They become spoiled and demanding - and expecting SOMEONE to always come to the rescue. Children need to learn the lesson that life is not always perfect and that there are ways to learn to cope with any situation.

I think it it is an important life lesson to be learned right from the very start. I don't think parents should intervene unless there are blood and/or stitches involved!

McFan, Since it happened with you, you probably do know best. But, do understand my neighbors concern. What if a teacher seems less than devoted? What about her child's education? There are so many wonnderful teachers, do we want to have our kids endure someone who isn't? Mitzi

Since this is not your daughter...what would YOU do???

That sort of depends. If I felt the teacher was not dedicated or had a serious personality clash with my child I might get involved. I'd like to think that I could teach her that life is about all sorts of challenges and encourage her to find the best in every situation. BUT, it might not be the right decision to teach her to try to adjust to all people, if it hurts her ability to learn in a ciritcal elementary school year.

Well, I may have spoiled my daughter but I wanted her to enjoy school, not dread going because of a teacher. Out of the 12 years of her schooling, I think I intervened at least 10 times, and once was in her senior year. That's what parents are for, I did this because I can remember my sister and a neighbors child who had the same teacher (20 years difference) who actually made them physically sick because of her cruelty. I also know that my daughter was in 3rd grade, and was going to have the same teacher again for 4th grade, my daughter told me how the teacher had grabbed childrens hair and had temper tantrums in front of the class. I made absolutely sure that she was not in her class the next year. I trusted my daughters concerns, and don't regret for one moment stepping in to make sure she didn't have to stress about an overbearing teacher.

My child is the same age as yours Mitzi and this is the first year that I have intervened. There are four teachers and two of them spend more time on their own personal lives and letting the kids play video games than teaching. I think it's the parents responsiblity to be an advocate for their kids. It's not about fixing everything it's about looking out for your kids.

So far, I believe that the my kids both have been lucky to have had the teacher's that they were assigned. After the school year begins and the students & teachers become comfortable with each other, and the mundane goes on.. then there is a potential for a problem.

Wheather (sp) a teacher is good or bad there is always something to be learned. That "something" would have to be patients.

When you have a bad experience with a teacher, that puts knowledge in your pocket for "if" that were to ever happen again, then you know the steps to solve it. Also, it is good for when your children have children of their own.

To coin the phrase from a song from Bobby McFerrin's CD "Medicine Man"... "for those who have been trained by it, no dicipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful; however it produces a harvest of righteousness
and peace"....

and the song goes on.

Have a GREAT & SAFE summer everyone.

I am a teacher and a new mother. This past year, my dedication to my profession sadly was not 100% I was still effective and gave all that I could. I took care of the kids in my class, and they loved me but that was it, I gave nothing else to the school. I have a good reputation and parents in my school understood.

Don't judge a teacher by their "devotion or lack of." Teachers have this "standard" or "reputation" that they come in early and stay late and they are always at every event and that is what makes them a good teacher. The truth is, teachers have lives too. I love my job, but it is just that, a job. Not my life, I am "devoted" to my family and myself, not my job. And I am still a great teacher.
If you have concerns about a teacher because of their personality, or discipline, or they way they treat kids, or they have a bad reputation or you get a bad vibe, then I would suggest you intervine. But remember, parents are the real teachers. It's not a "devoted" teacher that makes or breaks a kid.

Dear Teacher,
That's the BEST comment I have heard about parents being the REAL teachers. In your defense I have seen parents who expect too much from the school and the teachers, but are unwilling to do their part! Thank you for your thoughts! Also, thanks for caring about so many children, not just your own! Congratulations on your baby and ...while I have you here....what is your biggest complaint about parents? What can we do to help teachers and kids to reach their goals? Mitzi

Hi! Like "teacher", I am also a teacher and a mother. I completely agree with everything she said and would like to add my own two-cents.

If a parent has a concern about a teacher, we teachers hope that the parent will address that concern with us! Many times, parents immediately go over our heads to the principal about their concerns without even making the teacher aware that there is a problem. A caring teacher wants to resolve problems with parents him- or herself before the parent takes the next step and talks to the principal.

Another thing--please don't form your opinions of teachers based on what a neighbor said about him/her. Meet with the teacher yourself and make your own judgement. I love my job, but it really bothers me when people who don't know me or my teaching style/ability base their opinions of me on hear-say before they have even met me.

Thanks!

Thanks Kelly, and I hope you have a classroom of wonderful kids this year!

Your correct to say that sometimes parents expect a lot from schools and teachers. I can't blame them, who doesn't want the best for their child. If I was to offer a suggestion to parents from a teachers point of view it would be to support and trust your childs teacher rather than expect and question what they do. My ultimate goal as a teacher is beyond MEAP scores or grades, it's is to help children feel successful and enjoy learning. Support school and let your kids know that you and your childs teacher are united. (Keep concerns between you and the teacher, don't involve the child.) Your kids are our kids too and we want what's best for them too.
p.s. Lysol and hand sanitizer are always good donations to a classroom!

my youngest son has graduated now but in the 12 years he went to school there where only 2 teachers in (his school) that where worth thanking after the year was done. I'll just tell you about a few, I can't tell about all of them, this would be too long, but when he was in the third grade, his teacher took his homework and crimpled it up in front of the whole class, I forget what he did wrong on his homework....but it made him cry...so I had a few words to say to her....in grade school he had two real winners....one looked at you like you where stupid, and the other one was so strict that most of the kids failed her class.....I worked as a lunch mom and my son was not coming to lunch so i went to his room and the teacher was keeping him in the room to finish a paper and was not going to let him eat lunch....I told her, oh yes he is.... you can't keep a child from eating lunch because of some paper...so I had words with her and took my son to the lunch room so he could eat....there are alot of bad teachers and principal (where we lived). I must say though when we moved to Almont, and he finished the last two years of high school at Almont High, the teachers here where wonderful, he flurished and got good grades,,,I believe that a teacher has a big influence on how your child learns and his attitude towards school, my son was never a problem child, he wanted to do good but with nasty teachers, it made it hard for him. sadly to say it seems some teachers are only there for the paychecks and not for the benefit of our kids.
